Francis of Assisi
John & Cher
In 1979 - John + Chers first date was at John’s piano shop - which was called ‘‘ The Piano Shoppe ‘‘ at the time.
As soon as Cher entered the doors of that piano restoration shop on main street in Bradley beach, NJ she fell in love with John & the pianos, the way of life. After some training, testing and success Cher began working in the business and John proposed and they were married soon after for over 37 years. Cher continues the family legacy today with their daughter Triana assisting.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I HAVE MY PIANO TUNED?
From one to four times a year - it depends on the environment, the type and frequency of use, and the condition of the piano as well as the players ear. Your qualified technician will help you determine what is best for your specific needs.
WHY DO PIANOS NEED TUNING?
Piano tuning is essential but often misunderstood. Pianos go out of tune primarily due to seasonal changes and the natural settling of the instrument. New pianos, in particular, require frequent tuning in their first few years as the strings stretch and the structure settles. Manufacturers recommend 3-4 tunings in the first year, and at least two annually after that.
The main reason pianos go out of tune is the wooden soundboard, which reacts to humidity. When humidity increases, the soundboard swells, raising the pitch, while in dry conditions, the soundboard flattens, lowering the pitch. This causes the piano’s strings to go out of tune unevenly.
To help maintain your piano’s pitch, avoid placing it near sunlight, drafts, or heat sources. During winter, keep the room temperature below 70°F to prevent extreme dryness. Using a portable humidifier or installing a humidity control system inside the piano can help maintain stable conditions. Unlike home remedies like jars of water, a humidity control system is designed to regulate the climate inside the piano, reducing the risk of damage.
DOES A PIANO NEED TO BE TUNED AFTER MOVING?
Yes, while pianos are built to withstand heavy usage and extreme string tension, the climate change during a move is what can affect tuning. The soundboard’s shape changes with humidity, which alters string tension. So, even a short move can lead to tuning issues once the piano acclimates to a new environment.
CAN ANYONE MOVE PIANOS OR DO THEY REQUIRE SPECIAL MOVING?
Pianos are not furniture and should not be treated as such. They are unique in their construction and require special care. Moving a piano improperly can be dangerous. We do not recommend moving pianos yourself, regardless of size. Pianos can weigh anywhere from 770 lbs to well over 1,000 lbs ( as much as an elephant ) which could lead to damage—even with a small piano. Contact us for more info and to schedule a piano move.
HOW LONG WILL MY PIANO LAST?
Pianos are durable, but they’re complex machines made of wood, metal, and felt. Over time, seasonal changes, wear, and use take a toll on the instrument’s structure, tone, and touch.
If well maintained and tuned regularly a piano can last for generations.
will it hurt my piano if I clean it with pledge or windex?
We highly recommend NOT cleaning your piano with Pledge, Windex, or any furniture polishes, as piano finishes are chemically and uniquely different from furniture finishes. You should only use piano cleaners or polishes that are specially formulated for the care and maintenance of your piano's unique finish.
We recommend maintaining your piano by a qualified piano technician.
